José Alberto Figueroa

José is a medical student in the Feinberg Class of 2025, and is originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico, currently residing in Chicago, IL. He attended Washington University in St. Louis, where he earned a BA in Anthropology with a focus in Global Health and the Environment. At WashU, José used his background in Anthropology to explore how context-adapted, community-engaged practices lead to more effective health related initiatives in under-resourced and underrepresented communities, locally and internationally. After graduating, José took a gap year to work as an intern at the Medical Organization for Latino Advancement. He hopes to use his experiences with Second Opinions to impact the lives of Chicago’s underrepresented patient population in a large-scale manner, learn about the health care system, and become a better advocate of health equity for the Latinx and immigrant community in Chicago. In his free time, José enjoys playing basketball, volleyball, hiking, and improving his chess game.
